VIETNAM WAR Why were Vietnam Veterans treated badly and how did this affect them?   Background In the nineteenth Century Vietnam became a colony of the French. During World War II the Japanese defeated the French and took over Vietnam. Later the French tried to regain power over Vietnam but failed. From 1946 until 1954, Vietnam struggled for their independency from France during the First Indochina War. In accords to the Geneva Convention of 1954, Vietnam was divided into the join and South, and was and promised to hold democratic elections and reunite the country. The US said that they would permit the country vote its leader in but when the communists looked manage they were going to win the US cancelled the election. It was after this the Ho chi Minh, who founded a communist organization called the Viet Minh. Ho Chi Minh was supported by the Soviet Union and China, while the US and Australia supported South Vietnam. US intervention was influenced by the eye mask theory. They thought if Vietnam became communist, communism would stagger to the rest of South eastern hemisphere Asia. In 1972 and 1973 Australia and the United States called the last of their troops back from Vietnam realising that they couldnt win this war.

Although many South Vietnamese units were ready to ward Saigon, the president Duong Van Minh ordered surrender on April 30 1975.
