On May 14, 1948, the last British forces left Haifa. The Jewish Agency, led by David Ben-Gurion, declared the geological formation of the State of Israel, in accordance with the 1947 UN Partition Plan. Ben-Gurion became Prime rector of the newly state. Both superpower leaders, U.S. President Harry S. Truman and Soviet leader Joseph Stalin, immediately recognized the new state. At this beat the Jewish population of Palestine was approximately 650,000, the Arab population rough 1.2 million. The Arab League members Egypt, Transjordan, Syria, Lebanon and Iraq refused to accept the UN partition plan and proclaimed the office of self-determination for the Arabs across the whole of Palestine.
The first armed aggression
The new state of Israel had an organized and efficient army, the Haganah, under the command of Israel Galili. It numbered around 30,000 men, including the Palmach under General Yigael Allon.
