A unnamed father and his young news journey across a grim post-apocalyptic landscape, some years after a major unexplained cataclysm has done for(p) civilization and most life on Earth. The male childs mother, expectant with her news at the time of the disaster gives birth to the boy but commits suicide shortly after in the association that she cannot live in a bleak, lifeless world. The father figure (referred to as pa by the boy) is projected as being a guardian of his young son. He believes he has been appointed by beau ideal to protect his son and will do so at all costs. The father seldom assists other travellers because of his cautious disposition whereas his son often wishes he could help travellers. The fathers is stricken with a debilitating illness which plagues him end-to-end the novel and manifests itself in the form of a hacking cough and fucking(a) spit. In the end of the novel the father succumbs to his illness and pass of blood and his body is laid to rest near a stream in the opening of a forest.
