The biographic film ‘Malcolm X’, directed by Spike Lee, chronicles the action of iconic Black Nationalist loss leader and civil rights activist Malcolm X. Lee, renowned for his work examining racial and political tensions in the fall in States, employs various film techniques to construct a particular historic view of Malcolm X and his actions, exploring and providing insight on Malcolm X the man, the leader and the inspirational revolutionary, of whom m all, Lee included, nominate admired.

throughout the film, Spike Lee provides the viewer with an insight into the outlook and attitudes of Malcolm X at any particular point in his life, whilst also providing his own perspectives, influencing those of the viewer. Through the use of flashbacks from Malcolm’s childhood, Lee presents viewers with the events, including the Ku Klux Klan’s round down and widely accepted murder of his father, which most likely would have influenced Malcolm’s negative perceptions of white people later in his life.



These images paired with voiceovers of Malcolm’s perspectives, not only acts as a storytelling device and a justification of the choices he is to make besides also intends to manipulate the viewer into seeing Malcolm’s perspective, therefore effectively inducing a favourable impression.

At the cacography of the film, Lee highlights the naïve, insecure nature of the man then known as Malcolm Little, and the lack of identity he held. The depicting of Malcolm painfully straightening his hair with harsh chemicals to ‘look white’, emphasizes his despondency to be identified as part of the white community, rejecting his dense roots. As does his preference of dating white women, as oppose to black women. Malcolm soon finds a new identity, when approached by Archie, a leader of a gang.
