Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare at the UIC Theatre was my first time see a 16th century play directed in modern dress. Yasen Peyankov directed the production.
The play is set on Verona thoroughfare with the rival houses of the Capulets and Montagues on opposite sides. emphasis between the houses runs high after another brawl happens. The Capulets throw a party hoping that their daughter Juliet will illuminate in love with Paris, a cousin to the Prince. At the party, Romeo and Juliet sicken in love without knowing each other names. after a romantic balcony encounter, Romeo runs to Friar Laurence to ask him to marry them. Tybalt, a Capulet, challenges Romeo to a duel, who declines but his friend Mercutio accepts, and Tybalt vote downs Mercutio. Out of revenge, Romeo shoots Tybalt. Now banished, Romeo sneaks into Juliets room to consummate their secret jointure and later that day, Juliets father demands her to marry Paris. Needing help, Juliet runs to Friar Laurence. As instructed by the Friar, Juliet accepts the marriage proposal, then takes a vial of liquid, making her appear lifeless. Romeo hears of Juliets death in the first place he receives the Friars letter, and decides to kill himself at her tomb. Romeo encounters Paris at the tomb and kills him.
Romeo kills himself minutes before Juliet awakens. She cannot live without him and stabs herself. The parents find the couple together and reconcile their differences.
The subject of Romeo and Juliet is us against the world. The us in this case is Romeo and Juliet against all the varied social norms and family expectations. Romeo and Juliet come from the opposite sides of long time feuding families who basically despise each other just because they can and bring forth for the longest time. No one would ever think that a Capulet and a Montague would get together.
