Alfred The Great

Alfred was might of the Anglo-Saxons 871- 899. He is most famous for repelling the Danish Viking invasion of his kingdom in 878. He is the only side king ever to receive the epithet the Great, and the only king to ever be considered the king of the Anglo-Saxons. Alfred was extremely important in the formation of the English system of laws and was one of the first kings to pass on education at a time where may perspective it was non very important.
Alfred was born during 849 in Wantage, Oxfordshire. He was the youngest of basketball team sons born to king Ethelwulf and Osburga. Alfred made two trips to Rome as a child at the ages of 5 and 7. According to the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, he was confirmed by Pope Leo IV who anointed him as king during his first trip to Rome. Alfred later have a letter from Leo IV telling him that he was a consul or an ambassador to Rome since there was no way to tell that Alfred would become king since he had trinity older brothers at the time. His father, King Ethelwulf, accompanied Alfred on his indorse trip; they stayed in Rome for 1-2 years. Upon their return in 858 Ethelbald did non want to give the throne back to Ethelwulf. Ethelwulf worked out a compromise to avoid a civil war, he gave Ethelbald attend of western Wessex and Ethelwulf would retain eastern Wessex.

Alfred is not mentioned during the reigns of his two eldest brothers Ethelbald and Ethelbert. In fact Alfred does not become well known by the public until the identification of his third brother, Ethelred. In 866 Alfred was given the deed of conveyance of secundarius by Bishop Asser. This title meant that Alfred was the successor should Ethelred fall in battle.
